How to Inspect a Used Motorcycle Before Buying

Step 1: Inspect the Exterior
Check the motorcycle’s exterior for any obvious damage or signs of an accident. Minor scratches are not a big issue, as it is a used vehicle. Focus on any major damage that might affect its performance.

Step 2: Ask About Damages and Accidents
Inquire whether the motorcycle has had any significant damage or accidents and whether it has any modified parts. If the seller lies about this, avoid purchasing the bike. Based on our experience, a bike with hidden issues will likely require frequent visits to the repair shop.

Step 3: Examine the Engine
Look at the engine for any signs of oil leakage or stains. Check if the engine casing has discolored spots, which could indicate leaks, corrosion, or chemical damage. Use your phone to take a video of the underside of the bike to capture any potential issues.

Step 4: Start the Engine
Start the motorcycle and let it idle for 5-10 minutes. Listen for any unusual noises. If there are no strange sounds, then pull the clutch lever and check for noises like “dadada” or “cicici.” If you hear these sounds, the engine may have problems.

Step 5: Inspect the Exhaust Smoke

Check the exhaust pipe for blue or black smoke. If there is any, it means the fuel is not burning properly, leading to higher fuel consumption.

Step 6: Take a Test Ride

Ride the motorcycle and check if the handlebars are straight. Feel for any pulling or steering issues while riding. Test each gear to see if it shifts smoothly, and listen for any unusual sounds while driving.

If everything checks out, make sure to sign an official contract, not just an oral agreement. This will help avoid any future disputes.

Good luck, and may you find the right and safe motorcycle for yourself!
